Created with artist Maja Smrekar’s exhibition PINK, this structural installation bridges speculative narrative, spatial design, and advanced digital fabrication. The work originates from Smrekar’s research residency exploring the post-industrial landscape of the Solana saltworks in Montenegro. Centered on the great pink flamingo, Solana’s iconic symbol, the project contemplates potential futures of interspecies coexistence, sustainability, and life following ecological catastrophe. Translating these ecological themes into spatial forms, the structure’s custom topology mimics the intricate topography and spatial patterns of the saltworks landscape. Driven by material experimentation and 3D clay-printing technology, the design process yielded 25 entirely unique ceramic modules, each computational shape engineered to respond to the surrounding spatial narrative. The central technical challenge lay in uniting heavy 3D-printed ceramic elements with structural lightness. To achieve the illusion of a floating structure, each of the 25 unique modules was custom-fit into a pre-laser-cut aluminium net. Serving as a precise exoskeleton, this metallic framework holds the ceramic modules in tension, creating a seamless interplay between raw, fired earth and digital metal fabrication.
